Glossary of terms

ABA – Applied Behaviour Analysis

A scientific approach to understanding and improving behaviours, focusing on the principles of how behaviour works and how it is affected by the environment. ABA therapy is widely recognized as an evidence-based treatment for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), aiming to increase positive behaviours and decrease those that may be harmful or impede learning. Extensive research has documented the effectiveness of ABA in enhancing communication, social skills, and adaptive learning skills.

ASD – Autism Spectrum Disorder

A developmental condition affecting communication, social interactions, and behaviour. Each individual with ASD has unique strengths and challenges. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), autism is characterized by:

  • Persistent difficulties in social communication and social interaction, such as challenges with back-and-forth conversation, understanding nonverbal communication (like eye contact or facial expressions), and developing or maintaining relationships.

  • Restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests, or activities, such as repetitive movements or speech, strict routines, highly focused interests, or strong reactions to sensory input (like sounds, lights, or textures).

These characteristics are present from early development and can vary in severity. With the right support, many individuals with autism thrive in their own unique ways.

BCBA – Board Certified Behaviour Analyst

A BCBA is a highly trained professional in Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), certified to assess behaviour, design personalized intervention plans, and supervise therapy programs. At Elemenoe, our BCBAs do more than manage behaviour - they collaborate closely with families and our therapy teams to build meaningful, practical goals that help each child thrive in everyday life.

They track progress using data, adjust strategies based on what’s working (and what’s not), and ensure therapy stays aligned with each child’s strengths, needs, and values. BCBAs also coach caregivers and team members, making sure that the strategies used during sessions can be carried over at home, school, and in the community.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is a therapeutic approach that involves working with a trained therapist to explore and address emotional, psychological, and behavioral challenges. It helps individuals understand their thoughts and feelings, develop coping strategies, and improve emotional regulation. At Elemenoe, psychotherapy supports children and families in managing emotions, building resilience, and addressing mental health concerns, particularly those related to social, emotional, or behavioral difficulties.

SLP – Speech-Language Pathology

SLPs support children and families with speech, language, social communication, and literacy (reading and writing) challenges. At Elemenoe, our SLPs help kids learn how to express themselves, understand others, and connect with the people around them, whether that means using words, gestures, pictures, or devices.

We work on everything from first words and following directions to play skills, storytelling, and social conversation. Our sessions are play-based and practical, and we make sure what happens in therapy fits into your daily routines at home, daycare, or school.
